ETHICAL CONSIDERATION IN HRM


Ethics Defined

Ethics is a term. Many people think ethics has to do with a set of social conventions or a religious decree. In professional philosophy we do not typically consider this to be the definition of ethics. Philosophical ethics could be called the study of what is good and bad. Generally, philosophical ethics concerns itself with discovering a system one may use to determine who or what is good, or with evaluating systems that others have proposed (Okikiola, 2022).

Ethical guideline set out how employees are treated in general, and to the major HRM activities of organization development, performance management, reward management, employee relations, n employment practices concerning the work environment, employee wellbeing, equal opportunities, managing diversity, handling disciplinary matters and grievances, job security and redundancy (Armstrong, 2012)

Ethical consideration in Human Resource Management (HRM) are paramount in developing a fair, inclusive, and transparent workplace. As the guardians of an organization’s human capital, HR professional must navigate complex ethical landscape, balancing organizational goal with the well-being and right of employees. In the modern business environment, maintenance ethical standards in HRM is crucial for maintaining trust, promoting employee satisfaction, and ensuring long term organizational success. 

One of the important ethical consideration in HRM is ensuring fair recruitment and selection practices. HR professionals must strive to create a hiring process that is free from bias advertisement discrimination. This includes adhering to equal employment opportunity laws and implementing practices that promotes diversity and presence. Utilizing standardized assessment tools and structured interview can help minimize biases and ensure that all candidates are evaluated purely on their qualifications and potential.

Confidentiality and privacy are also critical issues in HRM. HR department handle sensitive employee information, from personal data to performance evaluation and disciplinary records. It is imperative that HR professionals safeguard this information and ensure it is used appropriately and kept secure. Organization must comply with data protection regulation, such as data protection regulations, data security measures to protect employee privacy (Wilkinson, 2009)

Employee treatment and workplace practices from another significant area of ethical concerns. HR professional must promote for fair treatment of all employees, which includes fair pay, safe working condition, and respectful workplace communications. Addressing issues such as workplace harassment, discrimination, and bullying promptly and effectively is essential in maintaining an ethical workplace culture. Establishing clear policies and procedure, along with regular training on ethical conduct, help support the organization’s commitments to ethical behavior.

Transparency and honesty are key ethical principal in HRM. This involves clear communication with employees regarding organizational changes, performance expectations. And career development opportunities. HR department should provide honest feedback and support employees in their professional growth. Transparency in decision making processes, especially those related to promotion, redundancy, and disciplinary actions, builds trust and fosters a positive organizational climate (Ekuma, 2015)

Another important ethical consideration is the fair and just resolution and conflict and grievances. HR department must ensure that grievance mechanisms are accessible and that employees feel safe to voice their concerns. Handling conflict impartially and seeking fair resolutions not only support ethical standards but also contribute to a harmonious and productive work environment (Armstrong, 2012).

Consequences of ignoring ethics in HR

Neglecting ethics in HR can have far reaching consequences for organization, including legal sanction, damage to brand reputation, low employee satisfaction and increased unethical behavior. Ethical lapses can result in financial losses, erode trust with stakeholders and harm an organizations standing in the organization.   

Importance of Ethics in HRM

The importance of ethic in HRM is due to globalization which has affected the organizational policies and practices to work in the work economy, the growing competition which force the company to find a competitive advantage and increase profitability. With the increase scop of companies to do business at the international level, there is an increasing needs to address the ethical issues dealing with HR. The company now consider HR as strategic importance and has considered being of competitive advantage for ethical decision making. This is because it is imperative to ensure only appropriate information is used in decisions affecting the employment relationship.   


Conclusion

Ethical consideration in HRM are essential for building a trustworthy, fair and inclusive workplace. Ensuring fair recruitment, protecting employee confidentiality, encouraging for fair treatment, promoting transparency, and resolving conflicts honestly, HR department can support high ethical standards. These practices not only enhance employee satisfaction and engagement but also contribute to the overall success and reputation of the organization. As the business environment continue to change, maintaining a strong ethical foundation in HRM will remain a serious priority.
